Politics and politicians

O

Can LEGO parts be used to promote debate about politics and politicians? Yes, it is possible, and CLIC – the Polytechnic University of Lisbon’s Language Centre shows us how.

Politics and sustainability is the theme of one of the units at the Advanced Level at CLIC' English course. As politics always appears to be a sensitive theme and, probably, a not much-loved one, our teacher has proposed a new approach to it.

In this model each student builds a sceene, using LEGO parts and, after that, they present it to their classmates. The LEGO parts are supposed to represent the politicians, the people, some ideas and their relationships. Furthermore, students relate their own ideas about the theme with the scenes they have built.

This method seems to generate a good interaction among the students and show the way students look at politics and politicians.

Firstly, this kind of approach appeals to students’ creativity. They need to find, among an ocean of LEGO pieces, those which are adequate to build a sceene to sustain their own ideas.

Moreover, it seems to be a relaxed way to approach this theme, always seen as uncomfortable or even polemic, for many people.

Finally, after having built the sceene, each student describes it characterizing the politicians, using three strong words - which should convey ideas – about them.

The pictures illustrate some of the sceenes designed by CLIC’s students. Although they have different explanations for their installations, curiously the words they choose give the same idea about politicians.

Generally speaking, the global image of politicians is not good, indeed. Currently, they are generally connected with the use of power in self benefit, with corruption and, even with blood crimes as genocide.

On one hand, most students have connected politicians with words like: corruption; chaos; opportunism; darkness; or interest.

On the other hand, some of them – few to be honest – have recognized that some politicians are really connected with their causes and their people, though these are a minority.

To conclude, this methodology - using LEGO parts, appears innovative and could be a good way to promote the interaction, breaking the ice among students.

We consider that these results are, possibly, related with the students’ experiences -in the case, with the Portuguese situation. In that case, could the results of students from other countries and another social realities be different?

  1. I really have enjoyed to participate in this activity, it is indeed a very clever way to talk about controversial themes without harm anybody. At the same time it also push for the creativity of the students giving shape to thoughts.
Maybe the politicians in the debates also should do a Lego competition and show us their goals ahahahha.

  2. The use of LEGO parts to discuss politics and politicians is an innovative and effective approach. It encourages creativity and provides a comfortable setting for addressing a typically sensitive topic.
The scenes created by students using LEGO represent their perspectives on politics, with prevailing negative perceptions of politicians such as corruption and opportunism. However, some students recognize the potential for politicians to serve their causes genuinely.
Overall, this method encourages active participation, critical thinking and reflection on political realities.

  3. This was a very fun activity where a lot of creativity was shown by all the participants in it. We can see it in the different pictures shown here, where a lot can be said in a small Lego assembly while basing it on just 3 words to describe World politics. It also shows how dark the World of politics can be in a unique way.
Overall, this was a great piece of work.

  4. We agree that Lego is a great innovation to breaking ice among students because in the teenagers class we also play with Lego and we think that it is an excellent idea to learn more about different subjects.

Behaviours – A warning message from our world

We are facing one of the biggest challenges in human history, the world is changing in a rhythm without precedents and most of us are unaware of the consequences and the danger we may face. Our behaviour is harming our world, the industry overproduces, over-extracts, over-pollutes and over-wastes to support our wealthy way of living. We have been so inconsequent in these past years, that we have started changing the ocean – which was thought to be far too big to be affected by us. https://as2.ftcdn.net/v2/jpg/04/22/61/85/1000_F_422618559_aRLqzp8FaxIzkSf08dh496zKlAhba9I0.jpg  The ocean is where life started, the most diverse forms of life live there. More than half of all oxygen that we breathe is from the ocean. It controls the climate by distributing the heat and the global temperature by absorbing the heat. Without a healthy ocean, there is no life on Earth. Yet, it is still an alien in our planet, we put billions into exploring what is out there and we forgot what our pri...

Sustainability with URBEM

URBEM is an NGO based in Lisbon, which aims to awaken citizens living in cities to Nature, through the conversion of spaces little used or with low biodiversity, into miniforests or fast-forests. Using the scientifically proven method of the Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, who privileges the introduction of endemic native species of low maintenance, we seek to involve the local community to carry out the numerous tasks of planting and maintaining each of these spaces. Equally important are the educational and cultural taskspromoted around these spaces, with the aim of sensitizing the various age groups of the community on various themes related to nature. At the moment URBEM is responsible for two fast-forests in Lisbon - Parque da Montanha in Bela vista - in partnerships with the Lisbon City Council and the European projects CONEXUS and LIFE-LUNGs. In addition to these initiatives, the implementation of more miniforests is planned in 2023 - 2024, partnering not only with the L...

Sustainability with Lego

We were challenged to talk about sustainability. However, this was not a common conversation, where we debated our ideas and came to a conclusion. Instead, we demonstrated our thoughts through Lego. Each one of us had the same amount of pieces and had to create what was, in our opinion, an example of what's not sustainable. Here are the results: Picture 1 - Overpopulation & Industrialization Picture 2 - Polluting vehicles Picture 3 - Pools in dry regions Picture 4 - Vehicles that destroy nature Picture 5 - Factories Picture 6 - Short distance flights Picture 7 - Formula 1 from the future After presenting our creations, we faced another challenge: If what we had just created was not sustainable, then what was? We now had acess to all the Lego bricks available in the classroom, leaving us with the opportunity to spread our creativity on the table. We delievered it as pictured: Picture 8 - Sustainable energy from garbage Picture 9 - Creating a new enviroment for the animals; refl...
